Southern Kindness Gallery at SpaceHTX invites the public to the opening reception for “Yassou Yassou” by Papou, the exclusive solo exhibition of the gallery’s Inaugural Artist Residency on Friday, October 4. Papou is the first artist in residence at Southern Kindness Gallery and is known for her vibrant and evocative “Coastal Cowboy” aesthetic. The Greek artist has transformed the Houston gallery’s 5,000-square-foot space into a vivid tableau that spans large-scale murals and new, inspiring works. Her residency in Galveston enabled Papou to explore local history and infuse elements of the coastal lifestyle into her art. “Yassou Yassou” is a journey through a narrative connecting Houston and Galveston, celebrating the two cities shared culture and vibrant creativity. At the reception, guests can enjoy:
● Exclusive Artwork Unveilings: Be among the first to experience newly-created large-scale works and a captivating exterior mural designed exclusively for this event.
● Meet and Greet: A rare opportunity to meet Papou, discuss her works, and discover the inspirations behind her iconic style.
● Refreshments and Music: Enjoy an evening filled with delightful refreshments and ambient music to complement artistic exploration.
With “Yassou Yassou,” which translates to “Hello” in Greek, Papou embraces her creative freedom by painting with her hands. Papou’s subjects reflect her South Floridian roots, intertwining herself with Floridian wildlife to represent a deeper purpose, such as a seagull for presence and an alligator for madness. Papou’s creations invite viewers to engage with their own inner child, a peek inside the window of self. Her art is not just a reflection of her identity; it’s an invitation to explore the dualities of existence—the light and the shadow, the playful and the contrast—reminding us to celebrate the many versions of ourselves.
