Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is
dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. Unlike most U.S
holidays, it is a strange celebration without rituals, except for shopping and barbecuing. The
holiday founders in the late 1800s envisioned something very different from what the day has
become. The founders were looking for two things: a means of unifying union workers and a
reduction in work time.
Labor day weekend is only three days, but many people enjoy themselves to the full.
Even though many activities are limited due to coronavirus, some people have pretty interesting
plans for their labor day weekend.
Lauren Chaffin, a senior at Memorial high school, is looking forward to Labor day
weekend. She said that “Over the two-day break for the hurricane she became obsessed with
One Direction, so this labor day weekend I will most likely continue my binge of One Direction
content on various media platforms.” Lauren will also attempt to convince her friends to
accompany her to Louis Tomlinson’s April 23rd Houston Concert that will hopefully happen.
Polacheck's family is also very excited about Labor day weekend. They do not have any
laid out plan for Labor day, so usually in these situations, they just like to decide on a whim and
take a spontaneous road trip or quick flight somewhere. Delaney Polocheck said that “ I know
my parents have been super interested in taking a trip down to Cabo, but they have also talked
about taking a road trip and glamping in the Grand Canyon.”
