Swoon Memorial Magazine sat dow and learned about Ben’s Secrets to being fit over fifty and here is what he said…
My wife, Tamara and I are recent empty nesters and own 10 Joint Chiropractic clinics in the Houston area. We have two grown children, Natalee who is a sophomore at Babson College and Benjamin who is an investment banker in Boston. Working out has been a priority in my life for a long time, but my daily commitment has ebbed and flowed through the years. We heard you had some lifestyle changes in recent 6 months. Would you mind sharing them?
This was all driven by my fear that I was not going to live past 56-years-old because my dad died at 56. So I decided to channel the negative self talk into a positive direction and get into the best shape of my life and compete in a National Physique Competition in the Master over 55 Division. Hopefully some of your readers will read this story and be “Inspired” to make some positive and lasting changes in their lifestyle.
Here are the three steps I took:
Step one was to ask Tamara if she would support me through the process. Step two was to engage an experienced trainer, knowledgeable dietitian and an experienced show prep professional. And finally, I needed to give up wine, margaritas, cigars, bad food choices, and late night Netflix…all the good stuff.
Why did you feel it was important to participate in a fitness competition at this stage in your life?
I needed an end goal and competing in the 2019 Branch Warren National Qualifier to earn my national qualification card seemed like an achievable 18 week process. My journey was tough but the benefits of being in great shape far exceed being addicted to an unhealthy lifestyle.
If someone were to read this and you have inspired them, what is their first step? Having a professional trainer and dietitian guiding me along the way was a key factor to my successful outcome. My trainer Ryan Harrison provided a meal plan each week, mapped out my weight training program and designed my cardio schedule. I would suggest anyone that is interested in changing their routine should go and spend an hour with Ryan and let him tell you what he can do for them. Ryan can be reached at (IG handle) @thefrontlinefit or call him at 832-366-1885. Ryan is the ultimate professional and trains many Memorial Moms and Dads.
Last question, what is next? Anymore competitions?
Over the next 11 months I will be training to compete on a National stage in Men’s Physique Masters Division over 55 in an effort to earn my Pro Card.
