The former owners of The Gorgeous Gael Irish Bar, David Roche & Peter Kingston, have come together in a new adventure creating Hugh O’Connors Irish Bar and Restaurant. This informal bar is a take on the great Irish pub, no nonsense, no thrills just your everyday local. Serving a large selection of beers, spirits and the Best Guinness in Houston. But thats not all… they also serve fantastic food everyday and live music every weekend. Plus it features over 18 TV’s, a Big Screen and they try to show every game possible. We sat down with the owners to learn more about this new venture.
Hugh O’Connors is a new pub in Memorial area – where is it located?
We are at e Marq’E Entertainment center, 7620 Katy Freeway Unit 350, right around the corner from Edwards Cinema
Where did the name come from?
Hugh O’Connor was the Governor of Texas in the late 1700’s and widely known to be the first Irishman to have set foot on Texas soil. The name fit as we (myself & my business partner Peter) are Irishmen who set foot in Texas to provide you with a “taste of Ireland in Houston”
Do you serve food too? If so what kind?
Yes, we serve food daily, and what we describe as a higher end “pub food.” We’ve found that Irish bars in the U..S. have typically focused more on drinks than on food ; we are setting a standard of serving quality Irish and American cuisine, at an affordable price, in addition to a great Guinness & Jameson.
As a sports bar we serve all the favorites for watching the game: queso and chips, burgers, quesadillas, sandwiches, sample platters. And of course we serve traditional Irish dishes including a full Irish breakfast with Irish tea, shepherd’s pie, Irish stew and the classic fish ‘n’ chips. Our healthier option include an array of salads including my favorite Grilled Salmon Salad. We also have a delicious brunch menu available Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm. Also be sure to try our rich Guinness chocolate cake and the Jameson bread pudding.
What kind of entertainment do you all have?
Now that it’s warming up, we are starting live music on our patio Friday and Saturday evenings typically starting at 6pm through 10 pm. We are in talks with DJ Funk (Geneva) to be our resident DJ on Saturday nights. Our traditional Irish musicians “The Jig Is Up,” will play on Sundays starting at 6pm. Follow us on Facebook & Instagram@HughO’Connors for updates and announcements .
What is your favorite thing to eat and drink at O’Connors?
Hmm this is not easy … I’d have to pick our Shepherd’s Pie our Black & Stormy cocktail is probably my favorite drink – I’m partial to Jameson and the black-barrel with fresh lime juice ginger beer is very refreshing, especially on a hot and humid Houston day.
