Considered by many to be the “BEST AUTHENTIC GREEK FOOD IN HOUSTON” serving everything from “legendary” gyros and spectacular Greek salads to baklava, all in a fun, yet casual atmosphere. In September, we take a look at Niko Niko’s, a place that never disappoints. The food is delicious, everyone loves the hummus, large portions, great service and fast preparation.
Check out our interview with Dimitrios Fetokakis, Owner
Dimitri – Niko Nikos has been around awhile – tell us how it got started.
My parents started it back in 1977 with borrowed $350. We landed in Houston from New York to start over. My parents wanted to move away from NYC to raise the kids. We had landed in Montrose Thank God!!! We got evicted from our apartment and my father saw a sign posted for rent in the Montrose location. He ran across the street and told the landlord he would take it. They worked a deal to rent with option to buy and the then went to the farmers market on airline and purchased fruits and vegetables to set up a produce stand. The neighbors supported us, a lot like the Memorialites are doing for us now. He then borrowed restaurant equipment and started selling Gyros. 40 years later, here we are doing great!!!
You live in Memorial now- why did you choose here to raise your family?
I lived in Montrose for 35 years then got married had a baby. We looked for a house for two years and finally we saw a house we loved in Memorial. It felt good. Schools had a great reputation, big lots, trees. It felt right. It was the right move. The best thing about living here is my Neighbors. I have the best neighbors they have kids we are family now. We welcome each other in our lives the kids are outside and over each other’s houses everyday. I didn’t have that in Montrose. That is why I wanted to start a restaurant here- I felt it was a growing and thriving market
When you go out to eat, where do you go?
We love eating around here at other restaurants like Johnathans the Rub, Arturo Boadas on Del Monte , Carrabas on Voss, and I know this is galleria but I love Kenny and Ziggys too!! There are so many great restaurants in Houston!!!
Last Restaurant question…
what is one MUST have menu item we should try Niko Nikos?
At Niko Nikos we are known for our Gyros but at our I-10 location we make our own gelato! You must try it. I think it’s some of the best in town. I like the whiskey cream the very best!! Also our desserts selection is expanded there. As far as food on Friday – Sunday we have Rotisserie Pork it’s amazing!!!!
